About
Welcome.
NAACP
National Association For The Advancement of Colored People
Corona East Elmhurst Branch
Established in 1940
The Corona Branch of the NAACP was established in our community in 1940. Attorney Anton Slaughter, Sr., was elected President of the group. The organization met at the office of Dr. Reginald Chantrelle, 101-16 Northern Blvd. until 1943. For three years, for lack of a central meeting place, disillusionment and almost complete abandonment followed. With the election of Mr. Horton Smith to the presidency, a charter was given. In 1944, James Gadson became president.

Unity
Dedicated to being together or at one with ourselves. Not being divided. Unity is a word for togetherness or oneness. When the north won the Civil War, it assured the unity of the United States.

A Word From Our President
We as a nation are dealing with challenges both old and new. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken us into unexplored territory. The NAACP, an organization that has its share of challenges, is still on the front line serving the people of this nation and the world. We now face new threats to our democracy and freedoms.
As we enter the year 2025, we are experiencing many difficulties that we thought we had overcome. Many of these difficulties are woven into the history of this nation. The specter of hate and injustice raises its head at an unprecedented level. One would think and hope that we would be in a better place at this time in our nation. However, that is not the case.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the New York State Conference Leader L. Joy Williams, our National Board and President Derrick Johnson, for their leadership.

The year 2025 has also reminded us of the unforeseen events that impact on our lives. I am referring to the loss of our beloved leader, mentor, mother and friend Dr. Hazel N. Dukes. She was the rock that held us up, the glue that kept us connected and the chain that kept us linked to the national organization.
We celebrate her life and all she stands for. Dr. Dukes was a force to be dealt with and all that encountered her found that out very quickly. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
As we move forward under new leadership, I have every confidence in our new leader L. Joy Williams. I wish her well and much success.
I would also like to thank our branch members for the work they do every day. To the officers and members of the Executive Committees, thank you for your devotion to our cause.
To better serve our community, we have launched this website with hope of extending our reach. Social media is a pathway to our young people and those that are unable to be with us in person. We will be providing information that will be informative and helpful in understanding the goals of our organization.
Finally, membership is the life blood or our organization. We invite you to become a member of our branch or the branch where you live. Join today.
Go to our national website for information regarding our many programs and services offered.
